Metrolinx is connecting communities across the Greater Golden Horseshoe. Metrolinx operates GO Transit and UP Express, as well as the PRESTO fare payment system. We are also building new and improved rapid transit, including GO Expansion, Light Rail Transit routes, and major expansions to Toronto’s subway system, to get people where they need to go, better, faster and easier. This role is an in‑office position based at our 277 Front Street W location. Our team is highly collaborative, and much of our work benefits from in‑person co‑creation, relationship‑building, and hands‑on partnership with leaders across the organization.
Our Occupational Health, Safety and Environment (OHSE) Training and Development department within the Safety Division is seeking a Content Development Specialist to contribute to the development of the overall learning strategy for the Safety Division and its leaders based on competency profiles and training needs analysis; leverages sound Information Design methodologies to develop training and development solutions to support complex work and processes. The position is responsible for facilitating continuous improvement through the development of effective and sustainable training programs and development solutions that transforms complex theories and concepts into understandable, relatable, and memorable solutions
What will I be doing?
- Lead the development of training and development programs by designing web-based and static content assets and solutions.
- Interprets client requests into tangible, achievable, and sustainable solutions that have a positive impact on the business by preparing Safety’s integrated team to develop new skill and improve existing skills.
- Develops blended learning material for live and virtual training programs that include facilitator/participant guides, eLearning, simulations, presentation decks, and learner support resources such as user guides, demonstration videos, job aids, workbooks and other methods
- Converts textual information into visual data to bringing meaning to abstract or difficult to understand concepts and theories to promote learning transfer.
- Applies Information Design best practices in layouts, graphic user interfaces to transform complex content into easy to learn and retain information.
- Creates aesthetically pleasing content that aligns to Metrolinx’s visual branding standards; develops a variety of media such as graphics, imagery, and animations and edits/combines video, audio, and photorealistic imagery to create engaging content.
- Creates content by using presentation tools, desktop publishing tools, and rapid e-learning authoring tools; programing interactive experiences by applying triggers, variables, and coding.
- Manages a repository of graphic assets and populates with reusable and transferable assets to support the work of the Safety Division’s OHSE Training and Development team to help increase consistency across solutions; creates custom visuals, graphics, illustrations, and animations to increase the learnability of content and knowledge retention. Uploads and organizes training content in the Learning Management System (LMS) platform and tests the transfer of grades to ensure that audiences can access the content and course completions are tracked.
- Researches new and emerging learning technology and recommends feasible solution based on requirements, timelines, and costs.
- Facilitates dialogue and discussion between subject matter experts to gather perspective and interpret vague ideas into tangible information (i.e. brainstorm, distil, and create).
- Collaborates closely with teams within the Safety Division to support the design and aesthetics of communication plans and releases to effectively promote the solutions the OHSE Training and Development team produces.
- Relationship building with senior level stakeholders in private sector corporations, government organizations.
What Skills and Qualifications Do I Need?
- Completion of a postsecondary degree in Adult Learning, Fine Arts or Computer Science, or a related discipline — or a combination of education, training and experience deemed equivalent.
- Demonstrated years' of progressive responsibility in information design, graphic design, multimedia design, developing eLearning, desktop publishing design, and applying learning theory in the creation of training and development solutions.
- Experience in Change Management or Project Management would be an asset.
- Experience in a government agency an asset. Experience in transit and Safety industries are an asset.
- Expertise in applying adult instructional/learning theories and principles, training methodologies and instructional design methodologies. Expertise designing, developing, and delivering training programs.
- Expertise in Information Design best practices, techniques, and approaches.
- Expertise in learning development technology (Articulate Storyline, Articulate Rise, Camtasia, Captivate).
- Expertise in Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, Premier, Dreamweaver, Acrobat, Character Animator).
- Written communication skills to design and write creative, high-impact content for training programs. Verbal communication skills to collaborate with a variety of staff across Metrolinx and to deliver dynamic and engaging training programs.
- Project management skills, including work planning, monitoring and evaluation expertise to manage multiple projects with competing priorities and tight deadlines.
- Relationship and change management skills to work with a variety of individuals at all levels within the organization as well as individuals external to the organization to effect sustainable improvements to Business Services programs. Strong customer service skills to respond to and work with a variety of stakeholders.
- Proficiency in MS Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.), and databases to produce documents, reports, and presentations.
