Hunters of Color (HOC) is a non-profit dedicated to promoting diversity and inclusion in the hunting community. Our mission is to create accessible, equitable opportunities for Black, Indigenous, and All People of Color (BIPOC) in conservation and hunting by dismantling barriers to entry through educational opportunities, mentorship, and providing resources. By fostering a welcoming and supportive environment, we aim to bridge the gap between communities of color and outdoor sporting traditions.
Position Summary:
The Director of Training and Outdoor Engagement will serve as a cornerstone of HOC’s mission-driven work by leading all aspects of education, mentorship, training, and engagement programs. This role is responsible for designing and scaling HOC's training models, growing mentorship pipelines, equipping partners and volunteers with tools for programmatic success, and ensuring that all engagement opportunities foster belonging, leadership, and cultural connection.
This role is both strategic and operational—shaping HOC’s national impact while also supporting on-the-ground delivery. The Director of Training and Outdoor Engagement will work closely with staff, volunteers, partners, and communities to build systems of education and mentorship that expand safe and welcoming pathways into hunting, conservation, and outdoor traditions.
Key Responsibilities:Leadership & Strategy:
- Develop and implement a national training and engagement strategy that advances HOC’s mission, aligns with conservation goals, and addresses systemic barriers to outdoor access.
- Create annual goals and metrics to measure program outcomes, engagement reach, and participant growth.
- Support coalition building by representing HOC at conferences, meetings, and in multi-agency partnerships.
Training & Mentorship:
- Oversee HOC’s mentorship programs, ensuring scalable and culturally relevant training for mentors and mentees.
- Design and deliver educational content on hunting skills, conservation, land stewardship, and cultural heritage that is accessible to BIPOC communities.
- Lead training sessions for volunteers, mentors, and partner organizations on equity, inclusion, and culturally informed engagement practices.
- Develop online and in-person training curricula, toolkits, and workshops to strengthen community capacity.
Community Engagement & Partnerships:
- Strengthen and expand partnerships with schools, community organizations, state agencies, and conservation partners to provide accessible learning and engagement opportunities.
- Work with local leaders and volunteers to ensure safe, welcoming, and well-organized events.
- Support youth, family, and community-based initiatives that deepen cultural connections to land and tradition.
- Elevate BIPOC voices in hunting, conservation, and education through storytelling, leadership development, and mentorship.
Organizational Development:
- Supervise and support staff, contractors, and volunteers engaged in training and engagement activities.
- Contribute to fundraising and grant development by providing program data, reports, and impact stories.
- Manage budgets related to training, mentorship, and engagement activities.
- Uphold organizational values of equity, justice, cultural restoration, and conservation in all activities.
Qualifications
Education & Experience:
- Degree in education, conservation, community development, or related field, OR equivalent lived/professional experience.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in training, education, mentorship, or community engagement, preferably in conservation, hunting, or outdoor access.
- Experience developing and implementing training programs for diverse audiences.
- Demonstrated ability to lead partnerships and coalitions with nonprofits, government agencies, and/or community groups.
Knowledge & Skills:
- Strong understanding of barriers to hunting, conservation, and land access for BIPOC communities.
- Familiarity with culturally competent mentorship and leadership development practices.
- Excellent facilitation, curriculum development, and public speaking skills.
- Strong organizational and project management skills, with ability to manage multiple initiatives.
- Collaborative, adaptive, and skilled in building trust with diverse stakeholders.
Preferred:
- Experience as a hunter or conservationist or deep knowledge of hunting traditions and/or conservation.
- Prior involvement with conservation programming, land access advocacy, or outdoor education.

Expected Outcomes
By year three, the Director of Training and Outdoor Engagement will:
- Scale HOC’s mentorship pipeline to reach thousands annually.
- Establish standardized training curricula for mentors, volunteers, and partners.
- Expand engagement opportunities that foster belonging and cultural connection in at least 20 states.
- Strengthen collaboration between training and conservation efforts, creating measurable outcomes for both access and education.
- Advance systemic change by building models that can be adopted by state and federal partners.
