The AFSCME Education & Leadership Training Department prepares members, leaders, and staff to effectively lead the labor movement into the future. We shape and build powerful local unions to be lasting vehicles for a just society that works for the common good and values workers’ rights and dignity in the workplace. We ignite and fuel activism and leadership through interactive teaching methods and the use of new technologies to expand the reach of our programs. This position will strengthen AFSCME’s digital and online learning infrastructure by designing, coordinating, and delivering high‑quality educational training modules.
Duties
- Serves as a technological coordinator for development, facilitation and troubleshooting of online courses in all learning environments.
- Builds scalable, secure, and union-branded online infrastructures that expand AFSCME’s capacity to deliver consistent national and affiliate-level trainings.
- Maintains a training-of-trainers (TOT) pipeline, equipping activists, stewards, and staff to deliver high-quality education across diverse regions.
- Designs rapid-response digital learning modules that support urgent organizing, bargaining, and political action campaigns.
- Advise affiliates on optimizing and aligning their Learning Management System campuses with national standards, ensuring consistency and high-quality learner experiences.
- Develops competency-based learning pathways and credential frameworks that strengthen member skills and support professional mobility.
- Cultivate and manage strategic partnerships with educational institutions and accreditation bodies to expand member benefits, college credit opportunities, and professional recognition for AFSCME learning programs.
- Conducts trainings in a variety of settings, including field training and one-on-one coaching.
- Leads the integration of digital assets including video, interactive media, and microlearning content into major AFSCME initiatives.
- Collaborate with other departments in the development and implementation of online components of major departmental programs.
- Make logistical arrangements associated with educational programs when necessary.
- Assists with nationally targeted organizing and political action campaigns in the field which requires extended travel.
- Performs other related work as assigned.
Requirements
Education and Experience:
Skills
Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university, advanced degree desirable with course work in labor relations or organizational development and a minimum of seven (7) years of related experience or any equivalent combination of education and experience which provides the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong background in developing, designing, instructing, supporting, and coordinating online educational content.
- Demonstrated successful experience in instructional design, adult education, including the ability to develop effective teaching modules and tools in a variety of educational formats.
- Proficiency in video capturing and editing.
- Ability to develop goals and work plans and execute projects effectively within a prescribed plan of action.
- Proficiency with online educational software, such as Drupal, Canva, Adobe, Blackboard, Articulate, HTML, Captivate, Camtasia and Moodle.
- Ability to meet deadlines, measure progress, and evaluate program effectiveness.
Travel, Driving & Work Hours
- Extensive travel and extended work hours, including evenings and weekends, are required.
- Valid driver’s license is required.
