Adjunct Faculty Job Description
The following document describesthe general responsibilities that JMVU University expects of adjunct facultymembers, as well as their specific duties. Some specific duties describedherein may change from one academic year to the next; however, such changeswill be discussed between you and the Dean of Academic Affairs or theVice-President of Administration and Academic Affairs. The responsibilities ofAdjunct Faculty will be similar to those of part-time faculty members and willbe outlined specifically in their contract. Nevertheless, adjunct facultymembers will generally teach only one or two semesters on a contract basis andwill not be considered employees of JMVU. As such, they will not be eligiblefor participation in the employee benefits package of the University.
GeneralPrinciples for All Faculty Members:
A faculty member is responsible forcreating a learning and teaching environment for students in accordance withthe educational objectives of the university. All faculty members are expected toadhere to the following principles:
Possess appropriate and currentknowledge and expertise in the subject area taught;
Provide competent instruction andacademic advisement;
Evaluate students fairly on thebasis of academic performance;
Encourage free and open discussion,inquiry, and expression by students;
Treat information about students’beliefs, academic records, political attitudes, and personal lives asconfidential information;
Co-operate in identifyingdepartmental needs and assisting in departmental activities;
Participate in university andcommunity activities beyond the departmental level; and
To refrain from any activitieswhich would constitute academic misconduct, a conflict of interest, or theappearance of a breach of professional ethics, when engaging in professionalactivities inside or outside the University.
All faculty members have arequirement of a minimum of one hour per week per class to be available forstudents who have questions or require counseling and/or guidance. In addition,faculty members are required to spend additional time performing tasks relatingto their position.
Descriptionof Adjunct Faculty Position:
Adjunct faculty members are personswho are appointed by contract for one or two semesters and whose primary responsibilityis teaching, which includes student advising and other duties inherent in theposition. Adjunct faculty members must meet the academic and professionalpreparation requirements of part-time faculty. They are appointed by theVice-President of Administration and Academic Affairs or the Dean of AcademicAffairs. Adjunct faculty will meet the requirements set forth in the syllabusfor the course that they will be teaching, as well as all requirements underFlorida law. Their responsibilities are the same as those of part-time facultyand are outlined specifically in this job description. Adjunct facultygenerally teach 1-3 credit hours per semester
Adjunct faculty members reportdirectly to the Dean of Academic Affairs and are evaluated on a semester basis.A satisfactory evaluation is based upon satisfactory fulfillment of the dutiesof the position as described below, the general principles for all facultymembers as described previously and the criteria stated in the university’sevaluation form for classroom observations. The evaluation form measures thefollowing elements of classroom functioning: punctuality in beginning class,instructional strategies, mastery of content presented, teaching materials,learning activities, and closing activity. After each observation, a copy ofthe evaluation form will be placed in the faculty member’s personnel file. Asigned copy of this job description will also be placed in each facultymember’s personnel file. All faculty members are also evaluated by their studentseach semester.
Duties ofthe Position:
· Teach classes as assigned.
· Maintain adequate records of attendance, progress and evaluationfor all students enrolled in classes assigned. (Copies of grades must besubmitted to the Office of Academic Affairs throughout the grading period.
· Revise, update, and file with both the Office of the AcademicAffairs Department and Dean, syllabi for each class to be taught, no later thanone week before the beginning of each semester.
· Develop new course materials as needed.
· Communicate with the Dean and assist in evaluating courseobjectives and sequencing.
· Recommend curricular changes as appropriate.
· Advise students and assist in monitoring “at risk” students withpoor academic performance
· Report any needed repairs of equipment and any needed suppliesto the Dean.
· Recommend to the Library Director the acquisition of referencematerials for the course or department.
· Develop new course(s) as requested by the Dean or Vice-Presidentof Administration and Academic Affairs.
· Attend faculty meetings and departmental meetings, as requested.
· Engage in personal and professional development and complete apersonal professional development plan each year;
· Attend faculty orientation and professional developmentworkshops as required;
· Know the purpose and goals of JMVU, espouse them in individualjob performance and assist the Dean in serving as JMVU Ambassadors.
