The Anti Police-Terror Project (APTP) is a Black-led, multi-racial, intergenerational coalition that seeks to build a replicable and sustainable model to eradicate police terror in communities of color.
The Community Organizer supports APTP’s mission by designing and implementing organizing strategies that center impacted communities and drive forward campaigns to end state violence. In partnership with the Director of Organizing, Senior Manager of Organizing and Policy, and Family Resource and Support Coordinator, this role builds community power through outreach, leadership development, and policy advocacy—campains may include work around our Defund campaign work, non-carceral responses to inner communal violence, intimate partner violence (IPV) and substance utilization, as well as communications and narrative work. The position involves remote work with occasional travel throughout California to facilitate workshops and convenings.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Community Organizing and Engagement
- Recruit and coordinate members into active committees to support organizing work.
- Grow grassroots support for APTP campaigns by deepening community relationships and engagement.
- Reach out to and build lasting relationships with community groups, partner organizations, and impacted constituencies.
- Track relevant city, county, and statewide meetings and mobilize community members to attend and participate.
- Disseminate campaign materials and talking points to APTP’s base in the Bay Area and Sacramento.
- Focus organizing efforts on Defund campaign work, non-carceral responses to inner communal violence, intimate partner violence (IPV) and substance utilization, as well as communications and narrative work, with an emphasis on bringing directly impacted individuals into the network as leaders and advocates.
- Represent APTP in community conversations, coalition meetings, and public forums to elevate our campaigns and build support for our strategic initiatives.
Planning and Coordination
- Collaborate with APTP staff to develop and maintain quarterly and weekly workplans.
- Create schedules of duties and ensure alignment with campaign goals.
- Coordinate logistics for in-person and virtual convenings, events, and meetings.
- Support county-level budget advocacy efforts in partnership with aligned organizations.
Education and Leadership Development
- Co-create and facilitate in-person and virtual workshops, trainings, and political education sessions that reflect APTP’s values and abolitionist principles.
- Collaborate with the Family Resource and Support Coordinator to develop leadership pathways for impacted community members.
- Co-develop curriculum for leadership development and skill-building among impacted families and community leaders.
Campaign Development and Support
- Help design and implement an organizing plan to launch APTP’s grassroots campaigns such as Defund campaign work, non-carceral responses to inner communal violence, intimate partner violence (IPV) and substance utilization, as well as communications and narrative work.
- Work with the Communications Team and Senior Manager of Organizing and Policy to raise awareness of campaigns and mobilize action-takers.
- Support campaign strategy by communicating with elected officials and relevant government agencies.
Internal Collaboration and Communication
- Maintain regular and effective communication with APTP staff, community partners, and impacted families.
- Coordinate across departments and with the comms team to ensure alignment and visibility of APTP’s work.
- Track and communicate progress and impact of organizing activities.
General Expectations
- Attend all APTP events, community meetings, and mobilizations unless otherwise cleared by a supervisor.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support APTP’s mission and the broader work of the team.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
- Deep knowledge of state violence and police terror, including how systems of oppression manifest at interpersonal, institutional, and structural levels.
- Strong understanding of community organizing, base building, and campaign development, including canvassing, committee coordination, and activation strategies.
- Experience using data and tracking tools to assess community engagement, campaign progress, and impact over time.
- Excellent facilitation and communication skills, with the ability to engage thoughtfully with impacted individuals, families, community partners, coalition members, and elected officials.
- Demonstrated ability to co-create leadership development curriculum and facilitate in-person and virtual workshops that are inclusive, participatory, and values-aligned.
- Collaborative mindset and team orientation, with the ability to build trust, share decision-making, and work cross-functionally with communications, policy, and operations teams.
- Strong planning and coordination skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities, organize convenings, and drive work forward in alignment with organizational goals.
- Working knowledge of social media and how to use it to support awareness, advocacy, and mobilization efforts in partnership with communications staff.
- Tech literacy and comfort with digital tools, including (or willingness to learn): Gmail, Google Docs, Google Calendar, Google Sheets, Microsoft Word, Excel, and Action Network.
- Ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and adapt to changing conditions in a fast-paced, movement-centered environment.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

The role requires computer and telephone time and usage, sitting at a desk, and frequent meetings in the community. This role involves sedentary work, with occasional exertion of up to 50 pounds of force, minimal force for tasks such as lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, or other movements. It also requires repetitive motion and substantial movements of the wrists, hands, and/or fingers. Additionally, close visual acuity is necessary for activities like data analysis, transcribing, computer terminal use, and extensive reading.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The position will be primarily based remotely, with the ability to work from home and with regular meetings with APTP staff, coordinating committee members, and members via phone or in person with some regular weekly office hours required. Communication and collaboration are key aspects of our remote work culture, facilitated through various digital platforms and regular virtual meetings.
