We are currently recruiting for a Director of L&D, reporting relationship to the Vice President of HR. This position is a high-profile role, and the candidate will be expected to work directly with all of Medcan’s managers, directors and executives across the organization.
The Director of L&D core mandate is to build and deliver scalable, high-impact learning programs that drive capability across the organization. It’s important that our workforce is equipped with the skills and knowledge needed to excel. The core areas of focus include:
- Training Program Development - to support our key corporate priorities such as hospitality training across the organization, including onboarding. Reviewing and refreshing existing training curriculum/materials, meeting with key Medcan stakeholders to identify learning needs and developing an organizational learning roadmap. Executing against that roadmap including personal development and delivery of employee training courses.
- Manager Development and Readiness - ensuring that managers are well-prepared and equipped with the necessary skills to lead their teams effectively. Develop a management learning framework to enhance the leadership/manager effectiveness and build leadership capability across the organization.
- Onboarding and Early Career Acceleration – continuing to evolve our onboarding programs and accelerating the development of early-career employees to integrate them quickly and effectively into the organization. Ensure that the onboarding experience is consistent for all new employees and set them up for success from day one.
- Internal Development Pathways for High-Potential Talent - building paths to help high-potential employees grow, especially as we expand to multiple locations. Manage the succession planning process. Work with leaders to identify successors and high potential employees and create development plans to build organizational strengths and future leaders.
- Succession planning and talent management - establishing frameworks to identify and prepare future leaders, ensuring a smooth transition and continuity in leadership roles. This proactive approach to talent management helps us retain our top talents and maintain a strong leadership pipeline and supports our strategic goals.
- Change Management Capabilities - building capabilities to support and adapt to organizational changes effectively.
Specific job details include:
- Reviewing and refreshing existing training curriculum/materials, meeting with key Medcan stakeholders to identify learning needs and developing an organizational learning roadmap. Executing against that roadmap including personal development and delivery of employee training courses.
- Develop a management learning framework to enhance the leadership/manager effectiveness and build leadership capability across the organization.
- Work with leaders to ensure consistency in new hire and ongoing training for their teams.
- Ensure that the onboarding experience is consistent for all new employees and set them up for success from day one.
- Maintain and update the content on Workday Learning, building e-courses and sourcing content from external sources. Ensure that the content is organized and easy to access.
- Oversee the annual performance review process and performance calibration sessions with leaders. Provide training to leaders on the review and objective setting process.
- Manage the succession planning process. Work with leaders to identify successors and high potential employees and create development plans to build organizational strengths and future leaders.
- Acting as the behavioural /leadership learning and development expert for the organization.
- Establishing an assessment framework to analyze and evaluate learning program outcomes and ROI to implement process improvements that increase effectiveness.
- Project manages Medcan’s annual Continuing Medical Education event for physicians and allied health professionals. Work with the Chief Medical Officer, allied health leaders and support staff to coordinate and plan the event.
- Design and plan the Medcan Values Days. Work with external training partners to create impactful sessions that support and maintain Medcan’s values and culture.
- Managing relationships with outside vendors, educational institutions, professional networks and other strategic service providers to support the company’s program design, development and/or delivery as required as well as enterprise risk initiatives. Negotiate terms and conditions with suppliers.
- Updating Medcan’s annual mandatory training and working with leaders to ensure all employees complete the training.
- Leverage key behavioural and cognitive assessment tools in succession planning led discussions with Executive and Leadership Teams in identifying high performance within each key function.
- Lead team building and coaching, development sessions through scientifically-valid behavioral reports for key stakeholders and their respective team members.
- Work with IT and Privacy and Risk leaders to ensure that Medcan’s mandatory training is updated annually to mitigate risk and ensure compliance with any regulatory/legislative changes (e.g., PHIPA, CASL, Consumer Protection Act, Accessibility).
The nature of the role requires exceptional presentation, critical thinking and organization skills. The individual must be able to work well with others and be a self-starter. A background in employee learning is required.

The Requirements:
- Undergraduate degree
- 5+ years of work experience which involved working with employees in a learning capacity and experience with a learning management system
- Ability to deal with individuals sensitively, tactfully, diplomatically and professionally at all times
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- A high degree of professional integrity, ethics, and confidentiality

This full-time role reports to the Vice President of HR. This is a hybrid role and the work schedule is five days per week Monday to Friday, in the office minimum 2 days per week.
