We are seeking an exceptional Head of Midwifery with the passion, insight and leadership skills to drive meaningful and sustainable change. You will bring a strong understanding of maternity care, a commitment to excellence, and the ability to inspire teams through visible and effective leadership.
This Trust-wide role spans both York and Scarborough hospitals, where you will play a key role in strengthening collaboration, consistency and quality across services. Working closely with colleagues, partners and the wider integrated care system, you will help deliver safe, compassionate and high-quality care for women, birthing people, babies and families.
This is a fantastic opportunity to further develop your operational leadership career. You will be supported by our Director and Deputy Director of Midwifery through coaching, mentoring and exposure to senior organisational leadership.
The selection process will include a panel interview and a focus group/task-based activity across York and Scarborough on
30th and 31st July 2026.

In This Role, You Will
- Work closely with the senior midwifery leadership team, Matrons, team leaders/ward managers, obstetricians, support staff and wider team members, providing visible, accessible leadership, mentoring and coaching.
- In conjunction with the Deputy Director of Midwifery, provide professional midwifery leadership and advice on the development of community and hospital based maternity services.
- Provide day‑to‑day operational oversight of maternity services across both sites and within community and outpatient areas
- Ensure safe staffing, effective patient flow, and escalation and work alongside the Deputy Director of Midwifery supporting development of workforce plans and recruitment and retention strategies.
- Support effective oversight of clinical governance, financial planning, and adherence to regional and national standards and evidence‑based practice to enhance safety and quality and monitor key quality and performance standards.
- Collaborate with key stakeholders including Maternity and Neonatal Voice Partnerships (MNVPs) and Patient Public Voice (PPV) leads ensuring co-production and high standards of patient-centred care.
- Champion a culture of equality, diversity and inclusion supporting learning, improvement, and professional pride.
- Develop effective feedback mechanisms to communicate Trust wide issues to midwives, nurses and support staff.
