The Project
The UK & Ireland are experiencing increased bid activity across our Defence Market. With the recent appointment of our Head of Defence as well as hiring our first BD Executive in the UK, we now look to continue to grow our team with the recruitment of two Junior Business Development Managers.
Role Overview
The will Junior BDM will Serve as the primary "Hunter" supporting the BD Executive by conducting market research, generating leads, and initiating outreach across the UK MOD to build a qualified pipeline for the senior BD team.
Key Responsibilities
- Targeting & Research: Use the Defence Sourcing Portal (DSP) and other tools to identify early indicators of upcoming MOD opportunities
- Lead Generation: Identify relevant Project Managers and Capability Leads within DE&S and Front-Line Commands (e.g., Army HQ, Navy Command)
- Outreach Execution: Draft targeted capability introduction emails and follow up via phone to secure discovery meetings
- Briefing Preparation: Research MOD priorities and pain points (e.g., via Hansard or MOD White Papers) to support senior meeting preparation
- Intelligence Gathering: Monitor competitor activity, contract awards, and identify areas where the business can differentiate
Requirements
Critical Skills for a Junior BD Manager
- High Activity Levels: Maintain strong, consistent volumes of high‑quality outreach
- Persistence: Effectively navigate MOD switchboards and gatekeepers
- Fast Learner: Quickly understand defence terminology (e.g., FOC, IOC, UOR)
- CRM Discipline: Keep pipeline data accurate and audit-ready for reporting to the Head of Defence
Domain Knowledge
- Demonstrate a solid understanding of the UK defence and security market, key customers, and industry environment, including early-stage capture and opportunity lifecycle processes
- Awareness of Operational Context & User Needs
- Basic understanding of how defence capabilities are used in the real world:
- Awareness of MOD Procurement & Commercial Frameworks
Progression Path
This is a hands-on development role. Working alongside a BD Executive, the individual will learn how to progress opportunities from lead identification to requirement shaping, ultimately preparing them to manage small accounts independently.
Successful applicant will need to be able to achieve UK SC clearance.
Security Clearance:
