Within South Sector the AHP teams work together supporting each other to ensure we produce high quality care for our patients.
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Band 6 Occupational Therapist to join the Acute Rehab team at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital on a full time permanent basis.
It is essential that you are educated to Diploma/Degree level in Occupational Therapy while being registered with HCPC. You should have significant post graduate experience with relevant previous clinical experience in Acute Rehabilitation.
This post involves a complex and varied caseload incorporating patient assessment, diagnosis, rehabilitation and discharge planning.
You will be clinically responsible for rotational staff, support worker staff and students, inducting, training and managing staff on a daily basis. You will lead in service development and service change within the team. You will be actively encouraged to develop through your 4 pillars of practice while participating in CPD, audit and research.
This post will require the post holder to work weekends.

Key Responsibilities
Clinical
- Is professionally and legally accountable and responsible for all aspects of own work, including direct and indirect patient care, within scope of practice, as per HCPC guidelines
- Assess capacity, gains valid consent and has the ability to work within a legal framework with patients who lack the capacity to consent.
- Using available evidence base, act independently to assess, plan, implement, evaluate, treat and progress patient care, to maximise functional independence and rehabilitation potential including decision making regarding discharge from care.
- Manages own identified complex caseload of patients effectively and efficiently.
- Works as a key member of a multi-professional team to ensure effective communication and delivery of care.
- To provide a comprehensive assessment of equipment needs. The Occupational Therapist assumes responsibility for identifying and prescribing correct equipment relating to an understanding of patient needs, diagnosis, and prognosis and needs to consider clinical contraindications and clinical risk.
- Maintain documentation, records and accurate statistical information to reflect care provided and meet professional standards, including computerised systems, where applicable, in accordance with Royal College of Occupational Therapy and Service standards.
- To attend and report in clinical review meetings, ward rounds and case conferences as appropriate.
- To provide specialist advice when required on the management of patients e.g. strategies for coping with perceptual/ cognitive deficits.
- In liaison with the AHP Team Lead develop, implement and evaluate appropriate clinical guidelines within clinical area i.e. SIGN
- To link with specialist internal and external working groups and specialist interest groups.
Managerial
- Responsibility for certain aspects of service management, as delegated by AHP Team Lead and/or Clinical Specialist, including deputising and daily operational management as appropriate.
- Delegate appropriate caseload and tasks and supervise rotational therapists and Support Workers to maximise efficiency while achieving desired quality of patient care.
- Act as a clinical supervisor, monitors and develops clinical performance of identified staff and with support and guidance, manages performance issues.
- Participates in the recruitment and selection of Occupational Therapy and support staff within the service.
- Develops a robust framework to monitor and evaluate standards of care and clinical
outcomes – benchmarking with similar units
- Identifies gaps and service pressures within the OT/PT team, discusses, identifies and implements remedial actions with the Team Leader.
- Actively promotes and markets the Occupational Therapy Service.
- Identifies and actively leads areas within Quality Improvement, such as audits, journal clubs and projects as directed by AHP Team Lead, Clinical Specialist and Professional Lead.
- To assist / cooperate in all matters necessary for the efficient management and development of the OT/PT Service as directed by AHP Team Lead, Clinical Specialist and Professional Lead.
- Adhere to the Sector Policies and Procedures to provide a healthy and safe environment for both staff and patients.
Educational
- Work in collaboration with junior staff in patient treatment sessions to assist in the development of their clinical skills.
- To maintain a high standard of clinical competence in area of specialism by training, education and self-study as relevant, and maintain own CPD portfolio to meet requirements of HCPC.
- Develop and update clinical knowledge and management skills in relevant clinical areas to ensure delivery of evidence based care in line with clinical team plan, to meet requirements of HCPC.
- Provides formal and informal advice, teaching and training to other members of multi-professional team, patients and carers.
- Participate in the induction and support of new and rotational staff.
- To act as a student supervisor for Occupational Therapy students on professional practice placements and to adhere to the course guidelines and placement objectives.
- To attend staff and service meetings.
- Any other duties within grade as deemed appropriate by the AHP Team Lead.
- Ensure Statutory & Mandatory training is kept up to date
Knowledge, training, qualifications and/or experience required to do the job:
Essential
- BSc / Diploma in Occupational Therapy
- Registration with HCPC
- Occupational Health Clearance
- PVG Membership
- Significant post-graduate experience, with previous experience in relevant clinical area.
- Evidence of experience in quality improvement e.g. audit / systematic reviews, research proposals
- Supervisory skill in developing and supporting staff
- Excellent communication skills

- Computer literate including use of e-mail, Microsoft Office and relevant clinical programmes
