The Safety Codes Council (Council) is an independent, self-funded regulatory organization mandated to oversee the system and technical disciplines through several key legislated functions and client-focused services. We provide leadership by guiding, educating, supporting, and collaborating with all partners in Alberta’s safety codes system.

THE OPPORTUNITY
The Education Excellence team develops, delivers, and maintains educational resources for safety codes system partners. As a key connector between the development and delivery areas of the team, the Learning Specialist plays a crucial role in ensuring effective student learning experiences by developing in-depth, practical understanding of the Council’s training and teaching environment and then applying this knowledge to the instructional design process.

A learning and education practitioner who possesses a strong understanding of adult learning best practices. You are personable and excel at building positive relationships with students and instructors alike. You find joy in crafting, updating, and maintaining learning materials. Your ability to apply educational theory allows you to mentor and guide those new to teaching with encouragement. You eagerly embrace innovative ideas and technology, staying current with industry trends. You are also flexible, willing to occasionally work evenings or weekends as needed. Most importantly, you are passionate about contributing to the Education Excellence team by sharing ideas and efforts to streamline operations for greater efficiency and effectiveness.
JOB DETAILS
- Monitor and enhance the quality of educational resources and student learning experiences.
- Coach subject matter expert webinar facilitators, instructors, and advisors on delivering engaging and effective training.
- Advocate for the use of adult learning best practices and support the integration of interactive technologies.
- Collect and analyze student feedback to inform instructional design decisions.
- Collaborate with teams to incorporate student feedback into the instructional design cycle.
- Assist in facilitating webinars with Subject Matter Expert (SME) instructors.
- Stay updated on best practices and recommend improvements to enhance learning experiences.
- Develop and maintain instructor, advisor, and student learning supports.
- Participate in student-advisor office hours to build relationships and understand student needs.
- Support instructional design development as required.
- Contribute to the overall Council culture and operations through active participation in projects and cross-functional teams.
- Engage in proactive professional development to support individual growth and Council objectives.
THE REQUIREMENTS
- Bachelor of Education or equivalent education and experience.
- 2-3 years of practical experience in teaching adults, including the creation of online courses and other learning materials.
- 1 year of experience with online learning.
- Preference given to applicants with experience or education in instructional design and/or coaching and mentoring.
WHAT WE OFFER
- The starting base salary for this position is between $73,000-$80,000, depending on education and experience.

Notes
- Hybrid work with two anchor office days: Office location is 10405 Jasper Avenue, Edmonton, Alberta.
- Hours of work: 36.25 hours per week (Monday – Friday).

About the Safety Codes Council
The (Council) is an independent regulatory body established in 1993 under the Act. The Council provides oversight of Alberta’s safety codes system through a number of key mandated functions including:
- Accrediting and monitoring the compliance of municipalities, agencies, corporations, and regional service commissions in administering the Act within specified jurisdictions.
- For the 300,000 Albertans who live in unaccredited areas of the province, the Alberta Safety Codes Authority (ASCA) conducts permitting, inspections and oversees spill and incident reporting requirements for storage tank systems across the province.
- Training and certifying safety codes officers to inspect the construction, installation and maintenance of Alberta’s structures and systems and administering Alberta’s Master Electrician program.
- Reviewing, formulating, safety codes and standards, and evaluating emerging issues in the safety codes system to provide recommendations to Alberta Municipal Affairs.
- Investigating complaints and conducting investigations on the conduct, performance, or competency of an organization or individual having authority, powers, or duties under the Act.
- Conducting hearings and appeals of orders and written notices issued under the authority of the Act.
