SUMMARY:
The Learning Specialist is responsible for providing advice, and support in the areas of adult learning, remediation, academic enhancement, time management, knowledge organization, and test-taking for medical students. The Learning Specialist meets frequently with students, both for one-on-one coaching sessions and developing individualized study plans, as well as group informational presentations. The Learning Specialist develops individual student study plans, designs, and implements academic support programs to promote student retention and success. The Learning Specialist will provide support to all student members of the OCOM learning community and guide students towards reaching their full academic potential. The Learning Specialist collaborates with faculty to implement strategies and services to support diverse learning.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Directs the day-to-day operations of the OCOM Office of Student Support.
- Supports the OCOM-approved policies and ensures that they are adhered to
- Creates, implements, and oversees integrated plans comprising targeted programs and services designed to provide individualized structured assistance for students with academic challenges. The plans are proactive, sustained, and implemented to enhance student success and develop independent, self-motivated learners.
- Creates, implements, and oversees data-driven programs and services to meet the unique needs of the most academically challenged students with the goal of increasing retention and graduation.
- Create, manage, and implement OCOM's peer tutor program
- Measure the efficiency of the tutoring program.
- Works collaboratively with Academic Advisors to monitor student progress and provide interventional support
- Schedule and monitor the use of academic services and resources including tutoring, and suggestions of data-driven interventions.
- Works with faculty and course directors for best practices to improve student outcomes
- Seeks out and maintains referral networks for academic support services
- Facilitates the referral process for students in need of additional support services, both on and off campus, including mental health counseling, financial aid, career advising, and medical care
- Conducts seminars and workshops for medical students to improve learning skills and test-taking abilities
- Ensures compliance with federal, state, college, and other outside agency rules and regulations
- Ensures confidentiality of student records in compliance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
- Assists in accreditation functions, including document creation, data collection, data entry, education of staff on accreditation, and other accreditation-related functions
- Explore professional development opportunities to stay informed about current trends and best practices to support medical students in their learning.
- Performs other related duties as assigned

QUALIFICATIONS:
- Master's degree and a minimum of 5 years (or Bachelor and 10 years) of full-time experience in a student learning role
- Previous experience as a Learning Specialist at an Osteopathic or Allopathic Medical College is preferred
- A team player who values cooperation, mutual support, and team cohesion
- Must be authorized to work in the United States
- Must be local to the Central Florida area
