Linguistic Learning and Intervention Specialist

Evoke Learning is growing and currently seeking a part-time Linguistic Learning and Intervention Specialist to provide reading intervention tutoring sessions, remotely, to struggling readers. This is a part-time independent contractor position that requires availability five days a week, Monday-Friday, for a minimum of 10 hours a week. These 10 hours (2 hours per day) must be sometime during Evoke’s reading program hours, which include 7:00am to 9:30am (EST) and/or 4pm and 8:30pm (EST). Reading remediation tutors provide targeted, explicit, systematic instruction aligned with the science of reading to improve literacy outcomes for students. Using Evoke Learning’s reading remediation curriculum, reading remediation tutors are responsible for delivering lesson plans, and assessing and monitoring student progress to ensure intervention is strategic and measured.

This is a remote position, and all service are delivered one-to-one, vitually. Evoke does not offer group programming.

Requirements:
As a reading remediation tutor, you will:
- Provide reading intervention to students, virtually, one-to-one, from Grade 1 to postsecondary, 5 days a week for 30 minutes per student, using interactive online tools and Evoke’s research-informed reading remediation program curriculum.
- Maintain clinical notes and set SMART goals.
- Work directly with students who have been identified as having reading skill deficits.
- Provide students with immediate feedback.
- Monitor, evaluate, and communicate student progress to Evoke and student families.
- Ensure student achievement.
- Conduct monthly progress assessments, used by Evoke Learning.
- Communicate directly with families and Evoke Learning, in support of the student’s goals and progress.
During the school year, the reading remediation program operates between the morning hours of 7:00am and 9:30am (EST) and between 4pm and 8:30pm (EST). Summer hours are typically daytime.
Skills and Qualifications:
- Candidates MUST possess an undergraduate degree and a post graduate degree (or be completing one) in linguistics.
- A deep understanding of the mechanics of language (phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics).
- Experience and interest in working with neurodiverse learners.
- Understand and support neurodiversity affirming practices.
- Knowledge of research-informed reading intervention based on the science of reading.
- Experience that provides demonstrated excellence in tutoring, teaching, mentoring, delivering programming and/or curriculum to children and/or youth, including neurodiverse learners.
- Exceptional individual initiative, patience, good judgement, creativity, and theory of mind.
- Experience and a significant comfort level working online.
- Tech savvy - hardware computer skills, productivity software (Word, PowerPoint, Excel), presentation software (Google Slide), Web applications (Google Docs, Google Drive), basic software skills.
- Familiar and comfort level with teleconference platforms; Google Hangouts and Zoom, and using online tools (interactive whiteboard, electronic letter tiles) to deliver programming.
- The proven ability to understand and effectively use techniques to engage and motivate students, such as learners with ADHD, learning disabilities, and ASD, online.
- Excellent communication and organization skills.
- Excellent English language speaking, reading, and writing skills.
Important Information:
- As independent contractors, reading remediation tutors set, choose and manage their own hours (within programming times) and client schedule.
- Reading remediation tutors are responsible for providing their own tools and equipment (i.e., laptop, mobile device, internet, cost of teleconference subscriptions – i.e., Zoom).
- Evoke does not provide in home services to their clients due to the learning needs of the students we work with. As such, tutors must be equipped to work exclusively virtually, including having reliable internet.
- Successful candidates will need to complete a thorough background check (police check and vulnerable screening), reading skills test, and submit references.
- This is a one-year contractual agreement. Consistent, ongoing support is necessary for our students. Reading remediation tutors are required to honour the term of the one-year commitment. Only candidates who are available to commit to a one-year agreement will be considered for the role.
- Reading remediation tutors are required to participate in an initial paid organization and program/curriculum orientation.
