We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Director of Learning and Talent Management to join our team at Lex Mundi.
The Director of Learning and Talent Development is a member of the Events, Learning & Membership (ELM) team and is responsible for developing and driving Lex Mundi’s efforts to support member firms in their learning, talent development, and people management efforts, and to assist member firms in acquiring, developing and continuously improving their lawyers’ and staff’s knowledge and professional skills.
The successful candidate must:

- Manage project and event budgets and timelines
- Provide unilateral decision-making
- Collaborate with team members and other departments to contribute to the overall success of the entire organization
- Build relationships with multiple stakeholders across the organization.
The successful candidate will be a self-motivated, intelligent, experienced, down-to-earth individual with strategic vision and excellent management skills. This is a fully remote position that must be based within the greater London area. 3-4 weeks of international travel per year is required.
Reporting to the Vice President, ELM, specific areas of responsibilities include:
1. Lex Mundi Institute programs
a. Partner with the Vice President, ELM, faculty, and the Learning Programs Manager on the programming for the Lex Mundi Institute (LMI) programs, including (1) Cross-border Transactions Associate Training (junior associates); (2) Litigation, Arbitration and Dispute Resolution Associate Training (junior associates); (3) Cross-border Transactions Program (sr. associates/jr. partners); (4) Litigation, Arbitration and Dispute Resolution Program (sr. associates/jr. partners); and Foundation Management Program (new partners).
b. Review programming for the above programs, recommending changes as necessary; understand the importance of building relationships with the faculty to gain buy-in and support of recommendations.
c. Work with the Learning Manager on the hotel and venue sourcing and contracting, logistics, and processes for all the above programs.
d. Collaborate with faculty to ensure the content is relevant and current, and the teaching method and style encourage interaction, discussion, and a positive learning experience.
e. Work with CEO & President and Vice President, ELM to shape a new hybrid learning program for law firms and C-suite leaders at a prominent European business school.
f. Develop a training program for associates in the Asia/Pacific region, collaborating with various stakeholders internally (Lex Mundi) and externally (host and member firms).
2. STARS (Skills, Talent and Retention)
a. In addition to the programs above, work with the Learning Content Manager to increase usage of the Mentoring platform, for example, by developing a communications plan. Review usage reports and provide updates to the Vice President, ELM. Ensure the platform is functioning per our requirements and handle renewals of the contract.
b. Devise a plan, collaborating with the Learning Content Manager, to make member law firm associates aware of the Associate Community, increase the number of users, and ensure ongoing engagement.
c. Develop a virtual leadership program aimed at mid-level associates that will provide opportunities to learn and practice skills such as effective communication, self-awareness, influence, etc.
3. E-learning
a. Partner with the Vice President, ELM, Director, Technology and Innovation, Director, Marketing and Communications, and the Learning Content Manager (working group) to implement a new learning management system for our member firms. This may include ensuring the recommended system is the best for our needs; securing buy-in from internal stakeholders and external members as needed; coordinating with a group of lawyers and Learning and Development/Talent Officers at member firms on a pilot of the platform; soliciting feedback from the pilot or test group; reviewing the agreement with Lex Mundi Head of Legal; managing the implementation along with the relevant working group members; determining how members will access the system and the look and feel.
b. Work with the Learning Content Manager to design the user experience; develop content ideas to be shared with the Vice President, ELM; solicit ideas from various member firm lawyers and talent individuals; canvass Lex Mundi staff for ideas; develop storyboards; review current videos to ascertain if parts are usable; review other Lex Mundi resources for applicability.
4. Conference programming
Collaborate with the Vice President, ELM, Senior Manager, Events, the Lex Mundi senior team, and host firms in the development of themes and programs for annual and regional conferences, the Managing Partners Conference, and the COO and Talent Conferences. Duties include deciding the format; synthesizing suggested topics from calls into relevant programming; researching and securing speakers; assisting with registration, speaker and AV management, and other logistical duties as needed onsite.
5. Additional areas
a. Work with the Vice President, ELM in organizing and coordinating regular outreach to those in the professional development/talent management/knowledge management positions at member firms and establishing links between similarly situated firms.
b. Research and recommend topics for best practices guides that reflect Lex Mundi strategic initiatives and members’ needs; drafting guides of best practices, working with consultants as necessary; working with Marketing and Communications in terms of the layout and promotion of the guides; and organizing live chats to raise awareness of Lex Mundi’s best practices series.
c. Serve as primary contact for the Talent Community. Work with Talent Community leaders and Vice President, ELM regarding topics for virtual and in-person meetings; secure speakers for such virtual meetings; devise a plan to keep members engaged through the Talent Community, etc.
d. Brainstorm ideas with the Vice President, ELM regarding how Lex Mundi can best assist firms in their DEI efforts, specifically in attracting and retaining talent, ensuring an inclusive culture, and incorporating a culture of wellbeing.
e. Assist the Vice President, ELM with the Chief Operating Officer/Executive Directors Committee by participating in calls and meetings, recommending topics for virtual and in-person meetings, and suggesting methods to increase engagement.
f. Supervise the Learning Content Manager and Learning Programs Manager, effectively delegating tasks as appropriate, ensuring they have clear and timely instructions and information, and feel empowered to work independently and comfortable asking questions.
g. Step in for the Vice President, ELM when needed.
Qualifications
· Minimum of 10 years of experience in learning, development, and/or talent management with a law firm, educational provider to the legal industry, or a professional services firm.
· Bachelor's degree or equivalent required, Master’s degree strongly preferred.
· Outstanding written and oral communication skills.
· Proven project management and organization skills.
· Experience in producing an event/learning experience from beginning to end, including hotel and venue sourcing, contracting, sourcing and working with speakers, onsite logistics; and developing impactful promotional and other communications.
Experience in:
· Designing, developing, and refreshing in-person and virtual training courses, especially business and skills courses, in a law firm, professional services firm, or provider to the legal industry.
· Identifying training needs and providing successful, innovative solutions.
· Understanding various learning styles and working with trainers/consultants to incorporate relevant techniques into training programs.
· Experience in working with professionals on an international level and with different training needs.
· Experience working with multiple stakeholders across organizations and functions and building consensus.
· Working in a law firm, with an in-house legal team, with a legal services provider, or with a professional services firm.
Compensation:
The candidate will receive annual compensation between 100,000 - 130,000 GBP. We also offer a generous pension plan and other benefits.
