Job Summary:

Learning science is a process and practice that applies the learning sciences using human-centered engineering design methodologies and data informed decision-making to support learners and their development. The learning scientist uses data and knowledge of enterprise structures to help promote good decision-making in the use of learning ecosystem components.

The candidate performs research-to-practice translation of learning science. Contributes to the evidence-based design of learning materials, curricula, and enterprise training/education systems; advises on pedagogical processes; designs, develops, and validates formative and summative assessments; advises on training/education evaluations; and performs independent quality assurance on digital learning materials.

Job Responsibilities:

Collaborate with the multidisciplinary RD&E team (e.g., Technical Product Managers, Software Engineers, UIUX Designers, Test and Evaluation Analysts and Engineers, Instructional Designers, Standards and Policy) to:

Define data requirements to support learner and learning insights through analytics and dashboards (i.e., visualizations of learning data for instructors, learners, and other stakeholders) within a learning ecosystem
Support the development of competency-based learning, including the definition of competencies and their aggregation into competency frameworks, and the descriptive data needed to support the use of competency information across the ecosystem.
Apply knowledge and skills related to human performance assessment to the development of behavioral performance assessments based on learner interaction with learning activities within a learning ecosystem
Collaborate with the R&D team to implement digital learning content and assessments in available learning technologies
Ensure the science of learning is represented within ADL Initiative projects and is communicated effectively to diverse teammates and layperson stakeholders
Apply human centered design and real world, complex systems mindset to the design and development of learning ecosystems
Coordinate the design and development of formal and informal programs of instruction
Use learning science to inform longitudinal curriculum designs that leverage multiple learning technologies and support tailored learning pathways
Execute work related to pedagogical (andragogical) models of the future
Execute work related to data-driven learning to optimize the transfer of learning
Author and/or edit informational publications (e.g., news articles) and technical documentation (e.g., technology-enabled curriculum design plans) relevant to learning science and learning technologies
Support the analysis and evaluation of training and education content as well as the broader learning ecosystem (e.g., effectiveness of dashboards for generating user insights)
Perform other duties not outlined above, at the discretion of the ADL Initiative leadership

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor’s Degree and a minimum of five (5) years of progressively responsible learning science experience. An equivalent combination of education (e.g., cognitive science, psychology) and experience will be considered
Knowledge of learning science, training/education assessments, learning analytics, and learning technologies
Familiarity organizing and conducting demonstrations, testing, and/or experimentation in a military context
Familiarity with the military context
Ability to design assessment strategies and assessment interventions for instructional contexts
Ability to apply learning science to develop requirements and desired instructional outcomes
Ability to apply learning science expertise to ill-structured problems
Ability to ‘own’ and proactively drive work
Ability to communicate and coordinate with military personnel (e.g., senior leaders, instructors, learners)
Acute attention to detail
Excellent time management and organizational skills with the ability to handle multiple tasks and competing priorities
Advanced-level proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook)
Excellent command of English (oral and written communication)
Ability to obtain and maintain U.S. Secret security level clearance

Desired Qualifications:

Familiarity of educational data mining and platform instrumentation
Experience embedding data hooks to analyze instructional effectiveness and/or developing educational technology tools

· Familiarity with IEEE data standards such as: IEEE P9274.1 Experience API (xAPI) 2.0; P2881 Standard for Learning Metadata; IEEE 1484.20.3 Sharable Competency Definitions; IEEE 2997 standard for Learner Records

Familiarity of the use of human-centered design
Familiarity with distributed learning technologies, such as e-learning, mobile learning, e-books, learning management systems, and course authoring tools
Familiarity with emerging learning systems, such as enterprise learning ecosystems and mixed reality
Familiarity with learning analytics and using learning data to inform instructional interventions or decisions
Familiarity with experimental design, as related to testing training or education interventions
Ability to create engaging and effective learning experiences
Ability to synthesize distributed learning best practices and new tools, technologies, and infrastructures to enable effective learning

Pay: $95,376.43 - $114,861.93 per year
