The successful candidate’s starting pay will fall within the pay ranges listed below. Base salary is localized according to an employee’s work location. Ranges are market-dependent and may be modified in the future.

For candidates living in Boston, MA, Denver, CO, New York, NY, Los Angeles, CA, Sacramento, CA, San Diego, CA, and Washington, DC, the pay range is $110,600 – $129,950.

For candidates living in the United States, besides Boston, MA, Denver, CO, New York, NY, Los Angeles, CA, Sacramento, CA, San Diego, CA, and Washington, DC, the pay range is $93,700 – $110,100.

Position Summary

PLEASE NOTE: This is a US-based role that requires the employee to reside within the 48 contiguous states.

The Lead Specialist, Staff Education & Training provides integral support to APHL as a whole through managing employee education and training initiatives. Key areas of responsibility include, but are not limited to, oversight and administration of the Staff Educational Series, training delivered by external vendors, and the APHL Leadership Academy. The Lead Specialist is dedicated to enriching the professional growth and skill development of APHL’s workforce by identifying training needs, creating and updating training materials, conducting relevant and engaging trainings, and evaluating training success.

The Lead Specialist, Staff Education & Training reports to the Manager, Leadership Programs in Experiential Learning and works closely with the Director, Engagement & Development in People and Culture.

The Association of Public Health Laboratories (APHL) works to strengthen laboratory systems serving the public’s health in the U.S. and globally. APHL’s member laboratories protect the public’s health by monitoring and detecting infectious and foodborne diseases, environmental contaminants, terrorist agents, genetic disorders in newborns and other diverse health threats.

Responsibilities

Conducts needs assessments and benchmarks staff training requirements
Designs creative, engaging trainings and materials that reflect APHL’s cultural standards and core values
Facilitates and conducts training sessions, workshops, and seminars on topics including but not limited to leadership, communication, project management, change management, quality improvement, meeting facilitation, and others
Organizes and maintains training calendar
Collaborates with internal and external trainers on training sessions, workshops, and seminars beyond the position’s topic expertise
Evaluates training effectiveness and areas for improvement
Maintains current knowledge of training trends and innovations
Coordinates APHL’s internal Leadership Academy, delivering presentations based on topic
Consults and partners with APHL leadership and programs to develop educational initiatives that improve team effectiveness, retention, career-pathing, succession planning, etc.
Collaborates within Experiential Learning on special projects
Participates in APHL week planning and delivery of educational aspects
Other duties as assigned

Travel Requirements

Flexibility to travel when required - less than 30% of the time (events are held within the United States)
Some travel by air required
Some overnight stays required

Education and Experience

Bachelor’s degree preferred
At least seven years of proven success as a Training Lead (or similar role). Education may supplement experience.
Experience designing and facilitating training programs, virtually and in-person

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of Adult Learning Principles
In-depth knowledge of training methodologies, coaching and skill development
Skilled in the use of learning management systems (LMS)
Proficiency in all Microsoft Office products
Excellent customer service skills
Exceptional verbal and written communication skills
Excellent organization and time management skills
Strong attention to detail
Ability to work effectively with a broad audience
Ability to build collaborative relationships and foster teamwork

APHL Weeks:

APHL Week is a Conference/Convention that is held at the APHL Home Office Bethesda, MD. This event is mandatory for all employees to attend. Travel and lodging will be reimbursed by APHL.

Please Note: Reimbursement for travel and lodging may not be possible for employees that are local to the APHL Home Office.
